Northern Suburbs at a glance

Luxury homes, significant urban development and never-ending views of the Stellenbosch Mountains define the landscape of Cape Town’s, Durbanville. This upmarket residential hub is seated in the northern outskirts of the Mother City, and renowned for producing wheat and exquisite wines. Lying just 32.5 km (30 minutes) from The Cape Town International Airport and 32.5 km (33 minutes) from the Cape Town CBD, Durbanville is centrally located to key points of interest, making commute convenient and streamlined for all its residents.

Then and Now

Water is said to be the start of life, and in the context of Durbanville, this rings entirely true, as its very establishment is rooted in a freshwater spring. This spring acted as a watering station for travelers passing through the suburb during the 19th century, and was a place where locals (mainly farmers) and travelers interacted. This interaction, coupled with the creation of the Dutch Reformed Church in the area, brought people together, and from it, a small village grew between the church and travelers - representing the first demographics in modern-day Durbanville.

From humble beginnings as a transit town, today Durbanville is renowned for its exclusive country estates that overlook vast winelands, and is largely considered a place that attracts the rich and successful. Although this is true, a burgeoning economy has seen the development of many commercial precincts, resulting in an influx of young professionals and families between the ages of 18-35. The town was predominantly Afrikaans speaking, however, owing to significant urbanisation, English began taking-hold, and there is now a close balance between both languages.

Attractions

Rust-en-Vrede

Remnants of the past still remain, especially in historical Victorian buildings that have retained its rich architecture. This is most pronounced in Rust-en-Vrede - a wine-estate that in centuries gone-by, was once a courthouse, prison, police headquarters and a magistrate. The building was testament to Durbanville’s sophisticated judicial system that led it to evolve into the Magisterial District of Bellville. Today, Rust-en-Vrede still retains parts of its past through its architecture, but it has let- go of its law-enforcement roots, and has instead become a place where the locals of Durbanville enjoy full-bodied, new-oak matured wines, amid vast vineyards. The on-site restaurant is also the perfect location to pair wines with delicious food, some of which include pan seared swordfish, Kalahari Springbok loin and a selection of fine cheese.
