Then and Now

On November 18th 1861, Bellville was officially awarded its name - inspired by the town’s Surveyor General, Charles Bell. From 1940 - 1978, Bellville solely had municipal status, and it was only in 1979 that is was given city status.

The area was originally known as “12 Mile Stone” – a reference to the 12 mile (20 km) distance between it and Cape Town. Owing to its central location, it was founded as a railway-station that connected Cape Town to Stellenbosch and the Strand, and represented a key transit area for travellers.

Today, the once simple railway has evolved into a major national railway located in the centre of Bellville.
